ROAD TRIPS

The best Brittany road trip routes

Four sensible itineraries for UK travellers — built around where your ferry arrives, how long you have and how much time you actually want to spend in the car.

Brittany looks compact on a map, but a road trip can quickly become a sequence of long transfers if you try to collect every famous place. The better approach is to choose one coast or cluster, spend two or three nights in each base and let your UK departure port, French arrival port and itinerary work together.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE

Four Brittany road trips worth doing

The easy first trip

Saint-Malo, Dinan & the Emerald Coast

3–5 days Best fit: Saint-Malo

A low-friction introduction to Brittany. Start inside Saint-Malo’s walls, add medieval Dinan and then follow the coast towards Dinard, Saint-Lunaire, Saint-Briac or Cap Fréhel. It gives you historic towns, beaches and coast without spending the holiday crossing the region.

The north-coast road trip

Saint-Malo to the Pink Granite Coast

5–7 days Best fit: Saint-Malo or Roscoff

For a longer northern route, move west from Saint-Malo through the Côte d’Émeraude and Bay of Saint-Brieuc towards Tréguier, Perros-Guirec and Ploumanac’h. Brittany’s tourism board uses Cancale to Perros-Guirec as a six-day road-trip corridor, which is a useful reminder not to rush it.

The wild-west trip

Roscoff, Finistère & Crozon

5–7 days Best fit: Roscoff

Roscoff is a natural gateway for western Brittany. Build the trip around the Finistère coast rather than immediately driving east: Morlaix and its bay, the Brest/Iroise coast, then the Crozon peninsula for cliffs, beaches and Atlantic scenery.

The south-coast trip

Vannes, Carnac, Quiberon & the Gulf

5–7 days Best fit: choose by total UK journey

This is the route for travellers who want beaches, megaliths, markets and island trips. Use Vannes and the Gulf of Morbihan as one cluster, then Carnac and the Quiberon peninsula as another. Tourisme Bretagne’s own southern itinerary links the Gulf, Carnac and the coast towards Crozon over seven days.

HOW TO PLAN IT

Three rules that make a Brittany road trip better

1. Count holiday time, not just kilometres. A 90-minute transfer can consume half a day once checkout, parking, lunch and check-in are included.

2. Use fewer bases. For a seven-night trip, two or three bases will usually give you more Brittany and less packing than changing hotel every night.

3. Leave space for detours. Brittany is particularly good at rewarding the unplanned stop — a beach, market, harbour or village you did not build the holiday around.

DRIVING IN BRITTANY

Distances are manageable — but don't underestimate the region

Tourisme Bretagne lists Vannes to Lorient at about 58 km, Brest to Quimper at 71 km and Vannes to Brest at 186 km. Those figures show why a cluster-based itinerary works: nearby places combine easily, while repeatedly crossing Brittany does not.

Before travelling, check current driving rules, traffic conditions, parking arrangements and EV charging if relevant. Our Route Finder is designed to compare the journey from your UK starting point through the ferry crossing and on to your Brittany destination.

ONE WEEK?

Our pick for a first Brittany road trip

If you have never been before, resist trying to see the entire peninsula. Arrive in Saint-Malo, give the city time rather than treating it as a ferry terminal, add Dinan, then move west along the north coast. Alternatively, arrive in Roscoff and make western Brittany the holiday. Both are more coherent than landing in one corner and immediately driving across the region.
