FERRY PLANNING GUIDE

When is the best time to book Brittany Ferries?

There is no single magic day when Brittany Ferries is always cheapest. The useful question is when your particular sailing, vehicle and cabin are likely to become harder – and more expensive – to secure.

Ferry fares can vary with route, date, sailing, vehicle and accommodation. Rather than promise a fixed "cheapest month", this guide shows where flexibility can save money and where waiting can leave you with a worse journey.

School holidays and peak summer dates are usually the least flexible part of the market.
Cabins, pet accommodation and vehicle space can sell differently from basic passenger capacity.
Compare the whole journey cost – UK driving, ferry, cabin and French driving – not the fare alone.
Promotions can help, but delaying a constrained trip purely in hope of a sale can be a false economy.

EARLY BIRD

Brittany Ferries Early Bird tickets explained

Brittany Ferries offers an Early Bird fare type – typically the cheapest available fare at the time of booking, excluding promotional offers. Early Bird tickets are available when you book 60 days or more before your outward sailing.

The trade-off is flexibility. Early Bird tickets require full payment at the time of booking, are non-refundable, and carry an amendment fee if your plans change. They are designed for travellers who are confident their travel dates are fixed.

Early Bird is only available on ferry-only bookings, not package holidays, and excludes promotional fares. If your plans might change, the Standard or Flexi fare types allow amendments and cancellations under certain conditions – at a higher headline price.

Because Early Bird rewards booking further in advance, it can interact well with peak-period travel where availability is the real constraint. But do not assume it is always the right choice: if you value flexibility, the cheaper fare may not be worth the restrictions.

BOOKING WINDOW

How far in advance should you book?

There is no single magic number, because the right booking lead time depends on what you are booking. For peak summer travel – especially July, August and school holiday dates – booking as early as practical gives you the best chance of securing the sailing, cabin and vehicle space you actually want.

Popular crossings can sell earlier than quieter ones. Overnight sailings on busy routes, Saturday departures and crossings that align with school holiday start dates can all become constrained sooner than off-peak alternatives.

If you are travelling with a larger vehicle such as a motorhome, or need a particular cabin type – pet-friendly, family or outside – treat availability as part of the booking decision rather than something to sort out later. Vehicle space and cabin inventory are not the same as passenger capacity.

Outside peak periods, you have more room to compare. If you can move the trip by a day or two, travel outside school holidays or choose between several routes, there is less pressure to commit early. Compare several dates and both direct Brittany and Normandy routes before booking.

PRICING

Why ferry prices change

Brittany Ferries uses a pricing strategy that rewards early bookers with lower fares. As capacity on a sailing is booked, the price can gradually move up. This means the fare you see today is not guaranteed to be available later.

Season is the biggest single driver. Peak summer and school holiday dates carry the highest demand and the least flexibility. Off-peak and shoulder-season travel can offer better value, but cabin and vehicle availability also narrows.

The sailing itself matters: a popular overnight crossing on a Saturday in August will not behave like a Tuesday daytime crossing in May. Your vehicle type, passenger mix and accommodation choices all interact with the fare, which is why two travellers on the same sailing can see different prices.

Promotional offers can occasionally undercut an advance fare, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Waiting for a promotion that may not arrive – while availability on your preferred sailing disappears – is one of the most common booking mistakes.

CABINS

Cabins and booking timing

If a particular cabin type matters to your trip, availability can become the decisive factor in when to book. Pet-friendly cabins, family cabins and outside cabins are all distinct inventory – they can sell out before basic passenger capacity does.

On overnight crossings, a cabin is effectively part of the journey product rather than an optional extra. If the right cabin is essential to making the sailing work for your family, check its availability alongside the ferry rather than treating it as something to add later.

We do not provide live cabin availability. Check current cabin options and conditions with Brittany Ferries for your specific sailing before booking.

TIMING

So when should you book?

For a fixed family holiday, especially in July or August, earlier booking gives you a better chance of choosing the sailing and accommodation you actually want. The same logic applies when a pet-friendly cabin or specific overnight crossing is central to the trip.

If you can move the trip by a day or two, travel outside school holidays or choose between several routes, you have more room to compare before committing.

WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

The ferry fare is only one variable

A quote can change because of the sailing, vehicle dimensions, passenger mix and accommodation. An overnight crossing may look dearer once a cabin is added, but it can also replace a hotel night and reduce French driving.

That is why Brittany.co.uk compares route burden first. Once you know which crossings make sense, check live prices for those options rather than shopping every ferry indiscriminately.

PEAK DATES

When waiting is riskiest

The more requirements you stack together – Saturday departure, school holiday, family cabin, dog, large motorhome – the less useful it is to think only about the cheapest theoretical fare. Availability becomes part of value.

For flexible off-peak travel, by contrast, compare several dates and both direct Brittany and relevant Normandy routes before booking.

PROMOTIONS

Do Brittany Ferries have sales?

Brittany Ferries can run promotional offers at various points in the year. The most commonly seen are seasonal promotions, occasional Black Friday or January offers, and fare-specific promotions tied to particular routes, dates or booking windows.

Black Friday and January sales, when they occur, can apply to selected sailings rather than the entire network. Eligible routes, dates, accommodation and booking windows can differ, and a promotion that applied last year may not repeat in the same form.

We do not recommend treating old discount codes as current offers. Always verify the live fare, terms and expiry with Brittany Ferries before paying. A promotional fare is only useful if it applies to the sailing, date and accommodation you actually need.

If your trip is genuinely flexible, a promotion can be worth waiting for. If it is not, delaying a constrained trip in hope of a sale can be a false economy – the saving may not arrive, and availability on your preferred sailing may disappear.

TOTAL COST

Cheapest ferry does not always mean cheapest journey

A lower ferry fare can be wiped out by extra motorway miles, charging stops, fuel, tolls or a hotel. A direct arrival at Saint-Malo or Roscoff may be worth more for one holiday; a Normandy route may produce a better total journey for another.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Booking Brittany Ferries FAQs

What is the cheapest time of year to book Brittany Ferries?

There is no universal cheapest booking period. Fares and availability vary by sailing, route, vehicle and accommodation; flexible off-peak travel generally gives you more options to compare.

Is it cheaper to book Brittany Ferries early?

Not every early fare will be the lowest possible fare, but booking earlier can be valuable when you need a specific peak-date sailing, cabin, pet accommodation or vehicle space. Early Bird fares are available 60 days or more before outward sailing.

Should I wait for a Brittany Ferries discount code?

Only if your trip is genuinely flexible. Promotions can have route, date and booking restrictions, and waiting can reduce availability on constrained sailings. Never assume an old discount code is still valid.
